Shell has partnered with eight organizations to form a consortium aimed at providing mining sites withelectrificationprescriptionof the pilot product.

Members of the organization include Skeleton, Microvast, Stäubli, Carnegie Robotics, Heliox, Spirae, Alliance Automation, Worley and Shell.

The company said the pilot program is a Shell Off-Road Vehicle Mining Electrification Solution, an end-to-end and interoperable electrification system that can be used without compromising theefficiencyor safety, while aiming to reduce emissions in conjunction withdiesel fuelPower operations are cost-competitive compared to . The pilot product combines high power with ultra-fast charging capabilitiesbatteriesSolutions and standardized microgridsrenewable energysystems, where the required solution can be supplemented by renewable generation either on-site or through the grid.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that no single organization can tackle decarbonization on its own,” Grischa Sauerberg, of the Shell division Decarbonization and Innovation, said in a prepared statement. “In carbon-intensive industries such as miningsectorThe need for collaborative efforts is especially evident in industries that face significant challenges, but also greater opportunities.”

Shell off-road vehicle mining electrification solutions include:

  • Power supply and microgrids: aimed at providing a continuous and reliable supply of renewable electricity in a secure and stable manner
  • Ultra-fast charging: Provides continuous operation of assets in the most challenging environments with flexible, hard-wearing, resilient, on-site ultra-fast charging points with a charge time of approximately 90 seconds
  • On-board energy storage: through a combination of advanced battery and capacitor technologies, designed to achieve long-life, ultrarapid rechargehigh performance

What are the benefits of integrated electrification solutions?

According to Shell, mine operators can expect:

  • End-to-end solution covering the entire journey of electronics in the drive train from generation to delivery
  • different equipmentmakersInteroperable solutions between brands and models to provide greater flexibility for mining operators
  • Modular design gives mining customers the opportunity to customize solutions to their specific needs
  • Reduce emissions without compromising operational efficiency or safety
