Hawaii, US stateA proposal to implement a road user charge (RUC) in Hawaii may not go over well, says the think tank Tax Foundation.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation is recommending a gradual shift to RUCs, according to a report released in August.The majority of drivers who participated in the report said they support replacing the fuel tax with RUCs as soon as possible. The state has set a goal of zero transmission in transportation by 2045 and eliminating the fossil fuel tax, according to Center Square.
HIDOT also recommends that drivingelectric vehicleof vehicle owners pay a fixed fee of $50 per year to change to a RUC, which is comparable to the per-mile rate paid by owners of regular gasoline-powered vehicles.
